All of my drop-in meditation classes are offered in the spirit of Dāna, reciprocal generosity. It is not a transactional payment in exchange for an offering but rather a gesture of support that expresses value for that offering and allows the continuation of these teachings to be offered widely.
Instead of a producer-consumer relationship that we are accustomed to within a consumerist and capitalist culture in which people tend to be regarded as discrete and separate subjects, the principle of dāna invites us to participate in ways that contribute towards a culture of reciprocity in which we are simultaneously giving and receiving. Zen monk Thich Nhat Hanh describes the spirit of dana beautifully here:
“A smile, a compassionate gaze, your calm and concentrated presence” - as zen buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh expresses, these are all priceless gifts that contribute to the awakening of our community and ripples out in immeasurable ways beyond the rooms we share.
If you would like to offer support, no matter how small, you can do so here.
But there is no expectation or obligation.
Your sincere presence is welcome, invaluable and deeply appreciated.
